O4SR 2020 Annual Meeting
This talk will explore the underlying forces that drive biases around science and how to fight against them. In the first half, the session will explore some overlooked biases like solution aversion. In the second half, the session will explore communication and change tactics such as modeling, change narratives, perspective communication, and incremental approaches. Complete with personal stories about ex girl-friends and becoming a better more scientific person for petty reasons, former Disney Imagineer turned social scientist Professor Campbell offers a realistic but hopeful perspective. It will cover the science of why we deny science and the less talked about science of how we can lead people to appreciate and act on science.
Dr. Troy Campbell is a social scientist with an artistic side. He is a marketing professor, professional designer, and researcher at Netflix Insights. He has worked at Disney Imagineering, Apple, and Comic-Con. His academic research has influenced the biggest companies, including Nike, Daimler, United Health, and the biggest government entities including being cited by the Obama Administration. He works for the change management organization On Your Feet and the fandom company Power Level Productions. At the University of Oregon he teaches classes on marketing, storytelling, scientific communication, the science of cool, and experiential design. He sums up his interests as, “I love using scientifically derived insights to make things awesome from experiences to art to social movements to business to education to just an afternoon with my family.”

The evening will include a short business meeting with the election of the Board of Directors. It includes pizza and salad and a No-Host Bar. The Annual Meeting is your opportunity to meet our Board of Directors and to provide the Board with feedback.
