A potential juror questioned for the Terry Nichols Oklahoma City bombing trial told US District Judge Richard Matsch that she believed serving on the jury would harm her karma. According to an October 2 Associated Press report, the woman was a student of psychic phenomena and energy fields in the body and believed "she received the jury summons because of a'past life experience.'" When asked if she could consider imposing the death penalty, she responded, "I think my higher duty is spiritual in nature and I feel that it would be unfair of me to judge that situation personally." She did tell Judge Matsch that if she were to serve as juror, she would notify him if she received any clear message. He agreed that would be the best procedure but added, "I don't know what we would do with it."

     A crop circle in a wheat field near the northeast side of the Silver Creek Falls exit on Highway 22 was the subject of debate by UFO and crop circle investigators. According to a report in the July 6, 1997 Statesman Journal, Mary Ann Koch, a Stayton jewelry maker and crop circle enthusiast, first spotted the double circle with a rectangular center as she drove home from work July 5. Koch contacted the media and arranged to have aerial photographs taken for documentation.

     In a July 12 article, Skip Schultz, Assistant State Director of the Mutual UFO Network (MUFON) said, "It looks like it's a hoax." According to Schultz, he was contacted by the farmer who had discovered the circle in his field on June 27. They found footprints in a ditch next to the field, one print leading into the field and one going out. Schultz also based his assessment on the number of broken wheat stalks and lack of weaving, noting that the wheat could have been pushed down with a board.

     Koch, however, said she has studied crop circles for about six years and some are woven and some are not, adding "In my mind, I'm pretty sure it's real."

     "Dowsers have found a lot of unusual magnetic, electric properties around circles," said Koch. She also told of a man in England who watched a crop circle being formed in just minutes by what appeared to be tiny fireflies in the air.

     The Massachusetts based BLT Research Team sent a field researcher to take soil and plant samples from the circle. A BLT official said research may show "that crop circles are caused by an atmospheric phenomenon that creates tornado-like winds that hit the earth in particular spots," the article stated. The official suggested that thinning of the ozone layer or satellites and cellular phone use were possible causes for increases in crop circles. "We're definitely seeing more and more of these all over the world," she said.

     The Boulder, Colorado weekly tabloid, Boulder Planet, carries a "Dear Abby" like column called the Psychic Counselor. In it columnist and psychic Lynda Hilburn-Holland uses her special intuitive powers to give advice to readers who write to her about their problems. In her June 4 column Holland cautions a married woman considering a liaison with her also-married high school sweetheart with whom she believes she has a "karmic" connection. Another reader who is commited to finding "Truth," takes Holland to task for her emphasis on "relationships." Holland discusses her philosophy for helping individuals find the "mission her/his soul is on." Hilburn-Holland is a "licensed psychotherapist, certified clinical hypnotherapist and professional intuitive." She asks that letters to her include the writer's name, address, phone number and birthdate.

     The wildlife management division of the California Department of Fish and Game in Sacramento dutifully records all reports they receive on sightings of Bigfoot, also known as Sasquatch. According to a September 19 Scripps-McClatchy news service report in the Salem's Statesman Journal, the file contains all official state correspondence related to Bigfoot, including newspaper clippings, first-hand accounts of sightings, and reports from scientific journals. The California department has on record two formal applications to list Bigfoot as an endangered or threatened species. In one of these the applicant writes, "These people should be given full protection as soon as possible for they are human. I know because I've seen them close up many times. They are as human as you or I, just hairy."

     Another report is from a Los Angeles man who phoned in 1991 to say he and two friends had followed a Bigfoot for three days during a hiking trip in northwestern California. Unfortunately they had no evidence with which to back up their claim. A Sacramento man has repeatedly offered to prove that Bigfoot exists. His cost? Only $17,000. The department has turned down his offers.

This two-day symposium, titled In Advance of the Landing - 2001, was held October 11 and 12 at the New World Teaching Center of the Unarius Academy of Sciences in El Cajon, California. The symposium was to publicize the coming contact with a civilization from "the Pleiadean cluster of planets in the constellation of Taurus." According to their full-color, eight-page flier,"Over a period of forty-three years, vital information has been communicated from advanced, intelligent humankind about the restoration of an Interplanetary Confederation and of Earth becoming the thirty-third linking member." Highlights of the symposium included: a procession of banners of the 33 planets and "mental contact" with "Alta, a senior scientist of the planet Vixall." Alta has been in contact with Unarius co-founder Ruth Norman (also known as Uriel) and Charles Spiegel (known as Antares) for the past 20 years.
